The Status of the Serum Electrolyte in the Malignancy

Abstract
In order to evaluate the status of the serum electrolyte in the patients with malignant neoplasms, which were classified as leukemia, lymphoma and other solid cancer groups, the determination of the serum K and Ca levels were measured.
1. The serum K level of the leukemia group tended to be more lowered than that of the other malignant group and presented hypotassemia in the. 36.8% of them.
The serum Ca level of this leukemia group were decreased highly significantly as compared to other malignancy (p<0.05) and 57.9% of them showed hypocalcemia.
2. There were no any definite differences in serum K and Ca levels between the lymphoma and other malignant group.
3. The serum K and Ca levels of the other solid cancer group didn¢¥t appear to be any significant abnormalities in comparison with normal control group. The hypopotassemia was noted in the 30.4% of this group, hyperpotassemia in 13. 1%, hypocalcemia in 21.7% and.hypercaleemia in 8.7%.
4. The serum K level of the leukemia group disclosed hypotassemia signi ficantly in the 58. 3% of patients with high febrile group (over 38¡ÆC,) and the serum Ca level showed hypocalcemia in 83. 3% of the leukemic patients with platelet over 5 x 104/=3
The lymphoma and other solid cancer group didn¢¥t give any correlation with serum K and Ca levels according to clinical parameters such as body temperature and the other laboratory examinations.
